About us

Our story

Por Legal began with a question we heard again and again: “What is happening with my case?”

Where we come from

Built around the people we serve

Newhope Immigrant is a California nonprofit corporation and an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) public charity in City of Industry. We focus on the people who need help most: new immigrants, low-income individuals and families, and others who are easily left behind.

Most of the people who come to us speak Chinese or Spanish, and some have had little formal schooling. Letters from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) or the immigration court arrive in English, full of legal terms, and an online case status can change without any explanation. Our clients counted on us to read those letters with them, check on their cases, and explain what each change meant.

As more people came to us, we wanted a name they could remember and trust. That is how Por Legal began: the name under which Newhope Immigrant offers immigration legal services, in person, in English, Spanish and Chinese.

Our name

What “Por Legal” means

Every part of our name carries a promise to the people we serve.

Por

For you

In Spanish, a language many of our clients speak, “por” means “for” and “on behalf of.” We stand with our clients and work on their behalf.

Portal

An open door

“Por” also echoes “portal.” We want to be the open door through which new immigrants find clear, reliable legal help.

破

Breaking through

To Chinese speakers, “Por” sounds like 破 (pò), “to break through.” We help clients break through barriers of language and information.

A new sunrise

Our logo is a speech bubble in the shape of a “P,” with a rising sun inside: conversation in your language, and the new hope in the name Newhope Immigrant.

Our mission

To help new immigrants and low-income families understand their immigration matters and protect their rights: clearly, reliably, and in their own language.

Our vision

A community where no one loses their way in the immigration process because of language, cost or a lack of information.

Our values

What guides our work

Integrity

We give honest, careful answers and never promise outcomes no one can guarantee.

Respect

Every client is treated with patience and dignity, whatever their background or education.

Clarity

We explain legal processes in plain language, in English, Spanish or Chinese.

Looking ahead

Today we follow every case carefully by hand, and we keep improving how we work so we can serve more people.
